The High Pointe Mural Completed in 2001, this mural graces the front foyer of High Pointe Baptist Church in Austin, Texas. It is a visual "abbreviation" of the Bible, from Old Testament to New, with the focal point being a symbolic rendering of God the Father, Son and Spirit. It rises from 15 feet above the floor to over 35 feet at the top, and stretches more than 57 feet from left to right. It was painted to the GLORY of His grace (Ephesians) and the word GLORY is "hidden", though if you look for it you will see it. Outlined in metallic silver, the "O" is obvious, the "R" is easy to see, and the rest is up to you! The image at left is NOT the whole mural. It is too large to photograph in one shot. see the left and right extremes in the photos below and to the left.

The center oval of the mural is symbolic of God the Almighty Father of all creation - the hands, at work, yet open in a gesture of love and care.
God, the Son - symbolized by a cross with light and a Man, pure, golden, arms outstretched.
God, the Spirit is shown by Bible symbols of the Spirit: water, wind, light...symbols of life!
The oval itself overlaps the earth, depicting God's omnipresence. The earth is illuminated by His light.

The left side of the High Pointe Mural (below) has the Old Testament story. Graphic symbolism of the stories of creation, the tower of Babel, the Flood, The creation of Israel, the Exodus and more.

On the mural's right (BELOW)is the New Testament. The birth of Christ, "fishers of men", His sacrifice, and symbols of heaven and eternity with or without Him are represented.

There is a special Christmas message...The Star which pointed the way to His birthplace is connected to another star. The crimson star, pierced into loving hands indicates why God became man: He would take on the punishment mankind deserves. 33 years after the first Christmas, Jesus would give His Innocent life as payment for our sins. The crimson spills out, down, and over the hands, becoming a picture of NEW LIFE given to whomever will come to Him for forgiveness. So the gold "man" below might represent the perfect Man, Christ. But it might also be the New Man (or woman), created when one places their trust in Jesus as their personal Savior.

"My favorite part of the High Pointe Mural might be this small little section on the far right side of the mural. (see right...) Jesus was crucified between two criminals. They each spoke with Him. They each responded to Him differently. Both were sinners, needing salvation at the end of their lives. One held onto his pride, mocked Jesus and refused to believe. The other, with a humble heart, asked Jesus to save Him and was given the sweet promise, "...today you will be with Me in paradise". If you look, you see the three crosses. Both little ones, planted firmly on earth touch the center cross. They touch at the "horizontal" plane.(Both thieves "touched" Jesus, the man. Just as we today acknowledge the "historical" fact that Jesus was a man among us). One cross also touches the dark empty eternity below. But only one cross reaches UPWARD and touches the LORD, Jesus Christ. The blood of the precious Savior now covers his sins. (see the crimson place where the crosses meet?) A free gift (paradise) is given to him for simply believing." V....Vaughan
For this story read Luke 23:32-43 |
| V....Vaughan is shown in the lift that carried her and her student apprentices 40 feet above the foyer floor. The mural was completed in 3 months after 6 months of planning and design. The "Hands of God" measure 12 feet high by 15 feet across. The "Gold Man" is life size. |
